Accelerated Reader

At a glance

  • Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program that schools use to monitor reading practice and progress.

  • It helps teachers guide pupils to books that are at their individual reading levels.

  • Pupils take short quizzes after reading a book to check if they’ve understood it.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a popular reading program that we use at Fort Hill IPS. AR helps teachers track students’ independent practice and progress with reading. It’s not specifically designed for pupils who learn and think differently. At Fort Hill IPS, our teachers use it to help guide readers to books they can read successfully.

The program doesn’t teach reading skills and strategies. It’s intended to encourage pupils to read independently, at their own level and pace. We are keen to help and encourage the pupils in our school to reach a target that has been set by their class teacher.
