Lady Mary Peters visited F.H.I.P.S

Over the last few weeks, the P7 class has been researching the many achievements of Lady Mary, from her early athletic career, through various successes in Commonwealth games and of course culminating in her glorious gold medal performance in the Munich Olympics in 1972.

We first of all made a visit to The Linen Museum where we viewed the Mary Peters display, then used our ICT skills to produce our own, which was exhibited in our assembly hall.

Before Mary’s visit we thought long and hard about what questions we could ask, who inspired her, what were her dreams and aspirations as a child, how did winning the Olympic gold medal change her life?

Finally, the day of her visit arrived. Mary, looking amazing in her tracksuit from 1972, entered the room and took time to answer all our questions and then spoke to the different children as they showed her their contribution to the display.

An amazing lady took time out of her busy schedule to visit and inspire the next generation of young people.

“Follow your dreams boys and girls, you can be anything you want if you work hard enough for it.”

A day both the children, and staff, will remember for a long time.
